Eighth Note

Eighth Notes have 1 flag when they are by themselves.

When Eighth Notes are connected, they are connected with one beam, like this. Eighth notes are counted 1,+,2,+,3+,4,+

This is an Eighth Rest. It is the partner of the Eighth Note. When you see it, you count, but do not play.

Legato

  • Legato translates as "Long", or "Connected"
  • In Percussion Legato means you let the stick rebound, like a basketball

3 rules of Legato

  1. You must use enough downward force for the stick to bounce back up.
  2. You must leave space between the back of the stick and your palm, so that you do not trap the stick down, and it can rebound.
  3. You must be ready to move with the stick as it rebounds, so that you do not inhibit the rebound.

6 things to think about when playing

  1. Counting
  2. Looking at, and reading the music
  3. Listening to, and playing with the metronome
  4. Keep your thumbs on the lines on the sticks, and maintian a loose grip
  5. Play Legato
  6. Stickings

16th notes

16th notes have 2 beams or 2 flags. They are counted 1 E + A, 2E + A, etc.

16th rest

This is a 16th rest. It lasts as long as a 16th note. You count them

1 E + A, 2 E + A, 3 E + A, 4 E + A.

Time Signature

The Time Signature tells you how to count the music. The top number tells you how many beats to count, and the bottom number tells you what kind of note you are counting.

Quarter Note

Quarter Notes have a head and a stem.  You count them 1,2,3,4 with the beat.

Quarter Rest

Quarter Rests are just like quarter notes that you don't play! You count them 1,2,3,4 with the beat.

Taiko

This is a Taiko. It's the drum you asked about on your first visit!

Time Signature

The Time Signature tells you how to count the music. The top number tells you how many to count, and the bottom number tells you what knid of note you are counting. This time signature tells you that you are counting 4 quarter notes per measure.

Eighth Notes

These are Eighth notes. You can tell these are eighth notes because they are connected by 1 beam. Eighth notes have 1 beam. You count them

          1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +

Eighth Rest

This is an Eighth Rest. When you see this you count it exactly like an Eighth Note, but you do not play. Instead, you rest. You count these

Time Signature

A time signature tells you how to count the music. The top number tells you how many beats there are in the measure, and the bottom number tells you what kind of note to count.

Quarter Note

A quarter note has no beams or flags. You count quarter notes "1,2,3,4" when the time signature is 4/4. You play the counts these are on.

Quarter Rest

A quarter rest is the partner of the quarter note. Quarter rests are counted the same way as quarter notes. You "rest", or do not play the counts these are on.
